Gold Binding Fusion Proteins

Product Applications

BioHesionTM recognizes numerous high value applications which are supported by our gold binding technology.

Surface Plasmon Resonance
Surface plasmons are charge density waves along a metal surface. If light is focused on the gold surface in a specific geometry, a wave passes through the layer and excites surface plasmons on the other side, producing surface plasmon resonance. The position of the SPR is extremely sensitive to the refractive index of the sample and therefore SPR is a technology in which the refractive index of a solution can be determined with exceptional precision at a metal surface which in practice is often a thin gold layer.

The most prominent SPR instrumentation has been developed by BiaCore, which markets several lines of high end, fully integrated laboratory instruments. Several other instrument systems are entering the market, though they generally compete in the large instrument sector of the market. A simpler, mass produced SPR chip (Spreeta) has been developed by Texas Instruments, which is being incorporated in relatively inexpensive instrumentation, potentially making SPR technology functional for the high volume biosensor, IVD / diagnostic fields.

Our gold surface binding technology has obvious applications in immobilizing detection reagents on SPR surfaces. We believe that sensor improvements provided by our technology will have particular performance benefits for the low cost sensor systems, making them viable for the applications described above.
